Growing up, it was possible that you were pinched a couple of times for slouching. You're told to sit up straight and pick your head up to show that you have good manners. It might have been annoying, but your folks were definitely onto something. The mind and body are more in tune than we realize. You'd be surprised how easy it can be to boost your mood by simply standing tall. The psychological effects of the body's posture on the mind can go even further than that.

During meditation, it's suggested that you sit comfortably so that your body relaxes, allowing for you to focus on the integrity of your session. Here, we have to make the distinction of how "relaxed" you should be. Laying on the couch may be comfortable, but you're more likely to fall asleep than enjoy a mindful meditation. Don't force yourself to sit in the cross-legged guru pose, either. Whether you're in a chair or on the floor, sit with your back straight and the crown of your head raised to the sky. If your muscles are tense, urge them to relax. Your body will fall into a natural position that will help you meditate more fully.

The idea behind sitting upright during a meditation is to keep your mind aware. It takes a little work to keep the mind reined in and away from thought. With a straight posture, your head is elevated and stationary long enough to be able open your awareness to themoment you are in. In stillness, you can find space between your thoughts and linger there. Teaching yourself to reach that level of mindfulness regularly has calming effects on your spirit and ego. You'll find that mindset becomes more accessible in your daily life. You'll find yourself more present from minute to minute, instead of being busy worrying about everything else. Moments of joy and peace will take root on a deeper level.

A detail as seemingly trivial as posture can have lasting effects on meditation. The upright pose of the body allows for a natural flow of energy to echo through the body's chakras. Sitting still also helps you breathe better, another element to a sound meditation. Proper posture is essential to an effective meditation and will serve to enhance your daily dose of Karma Bliss.
